This reflects the unique dual role of the Academy as one of the nation's leading academic institutions and as an active Air Force base. http://www.usafa.af.mil/Fort Carson - is one of the nation's premier Army bases, and home to several legendary units including the 3rd Armor Cavalry and the 10th Special Forces. www.carson.army.mil The North American Aerospace Defense Command or NORAD - is staffed by members of the U.S. and Canadian military. The mission of the command is to monitor anything that flies, both within and outside of the Earth's atmosphere, thereby protecting the airspace of the North American continent The mission of NORAD may not be well known, but the installation is quite famous. The actual base of operations is contained inside Cheyenne Mountain, and was built, as an engineering marvel, during the Cold War era.
